When Peugeot decided to entre Group B rally racing, they took the 205 from the production line and modified the car into a little beast. Per FIA homologation rules for Group B, Peugeot had to provide 200 cars to the public in order to race the car in the rally series. In 1984, Peugeot build 200 of the 205 T16’s for public purchase.

The 205 T16 was very loosely based on the standard 205. A tube frame was grafted to the front end of the car to support a revised double A-arm race suspension. The centre frame was steel monocoque. The rear of the car was lopped off and replaced with a race-oriented frame built of tubing and sheet metal. The motor was moved to the middle of the car with a gearbox borrowed from the Citroen SM.

The Peugeot 205 T16 was powered by a 1.8L, 4-cylinder, turbocharged mid-engine motor hooked up to a 5-speed manual transmission. The body of the 2006lb car was built from a combination of Kevlar and carbon fiber.

The Peugeot 205 16T won the drivers and constructors titles in the 2000cc class the final two years of Group B.
