The SPEC Racer Series was developed and marketed by the SCCA in 1984 as a low-cost racing class which allowed drivers to compete in affordable cars of equal ability. The purpose-built cars are meant to be raced on road courses. Over 1000 of these cars have been produced over the years.
To ensure that no performance modifications can be made, the series supplies sealed motors which include tamper-proof devices. The only adjustments that are allowed are to the suspension. The minimum weight for the driver is 260 lbs. Ballasts are added to the chassis of the car so that the driver can meet the minimum weight allowed by the rules.
The cars in these pictures are the generation 3 (GEN3) version of the race car. The car uses a tube frame chassis and a three-piece fiberglass body. In 2013, the series began using a 1.6L, DOHC, 4-cylinder Ford motor which is hooked up to a 5-speed manual transmission. The motor is capable of 135HP and pushes the car (1560 lbs including the driver) to a top speed of 150 MPH.
