The 911 was introduced at the 1963 International Automotive Show as the Porsche 901. Peugeot successfully sued for naming rights and Porsche renamed the car as the 911. Many Porsche purists still refer to the 911’s built from1968 as 901’s. Production of the 911 began in late 1964. Porsche built 232 911’s during the final three months of that year. The car in these pictures is #127.
With the motor mounted at the rear of the car, the 911 was prone to over steer when pushed to its limits through a corner. To lessen the problem, Porsche attached two 11 lb lead weights to the front end of the early 911’s to give them a more balanced weight ratio. The car could be very unforgiving to any novice Porsche driver.
The Porsche 901/911 is powered by a rear mounted, 2.0L, flat 6-cylinder boxer style motor with two Solex carburetors. The motor provided 130HP which pushed the car to 131 MPH.
