The Avanti was a last-ditch effort to save Studebaker. Raymond Loewy was hired to design and produce the car. Loewy was a well-known industrial designer who was best known for designing the modern Coca-Cola bottle. The car that Loewy designed looked unique and futuristic. The car featured a long hood and a short deck and a body built from fiberglass.
This 1963 Studebaker Avanti was heavily modified by the owner/driver, Dave Bloomberg. He removed the air conditioner to make room for a Paxton supercharger. The 289 cubic inch engine has custom roller cams, Arias forged pistons, and NACAR truck valve springs. Ballast weights have been added to balance out the car for extra traction. The motor produces over 800HP resulting in a top speed of 216 MPH. Total weight of the car is 3995 lbs.
In 2002, Bloomberg set a D/CPS class record with the car in the two-way run with a speed of 198.143 MPH.
