Mickey Thompson took four Pontiac powered cars to March AFB in July of 1961 in an attempt to break 18 land speed records. The car in these photos was entred into Class F. The rules for Class F state that the motor must be less than 1000cc. Thompson took a 195 cubic inch, in-line, 4-cylinder motor from a Pontiac Tempest and cut it into half to create a 90 cubic inch, 2-cylinder motor which was capable of 257HP.
Thompson used the car to set the record in the one kilometre run with a top speed of 91.37 MPH and the one mile run with a top speed of 106.78 MPH.
Many of Mickey Thompson's cars were destroyed when his California home burned to the ground in a wild fire. The car in these photos is a tribute car that was built using the original motor as a replacement to the Class F Racer that was lost in the fire.
