By the mid '60's, dragsters were quite popular at the drag strips of California. The quickest were the top-fuel nitro-methane dragsters but those cars were very expensive to build and race. To make nitro drag racing more affordable for the participants, an entry level class was created which was known as Junior Fuel (J/FD). To make the class more affordable, the cars used non-supercharged motors with less than 310 cubic inches and nine inch wide slick tires.
This car was built by Ed and Les Allen and was know as the "Stinger". The chassis was built from chromoly and the body from aluminum. The car weighted in at 1030 lbs. The car was powered by a 301 cubic inch Chevy motor with a direct drive transmission and a rear end from a '41 Oldsmobile. When injected with nitro, the car produced 700HP. The best run in a quarter mile was 8.20 seconds at 189 MPH.
