In 1964, AJ Foyt dominated USAC races winning 10 of the 13 the races held that year in a front engine roadster. It was also the last year that he would race a front engine car. In 1965, he raced the new rear engine Lotus Type 34. He went on that season to win seven pole positions and three races finishing in second place to Mario Andretti in the championship points.
AJ Foyt put this Lotus Type 34 on the pole position of the 1965 Indianapolis 500 and finished the race in 15th place. The car was powered by a Ford four-cam 255 cubic inch motor capable of 530HP. At 1200 lbs, the car had a top speed of 170 MPH.
