This car, the Vollstedt Racing Special, was the first of many Indy cars built by Rolla Vollstedt. He built this car in the racing shop next to his house in Portland OR with the help of Don Robinson. The car was the first rear-engine Offenhuaser to compete at the Indy 500. Len Sutton was the driver. Sutton qualified the car 8th but dropped out of the race and finished 16th with a broken fuel pump.
For the 1977 Indianapolis 500, Rolla Vollstedt hired Janet Guthrie where she made her Indy debut.
