In July of 1961, Mickey Thompson took four Pontiac's to March AFB CA in an attempt to break 18 land speed records. This car is the Assault 1. It is powered by a 1957 Pontiac motor which was bored out to 303 cubic inches. It has forged aluminum pistons and rods and roller tappets. A GMC blower delivered 18 pounds of boost. The body of the car was built from hand forged aluminum. The Assault 1 broke the Class C record for the flying mile at 149.93 MPH. What is a flying mile? Anyone know?
Many of Mickey Thompson's cars, including this car, were damaged during a California wild fire in 1985. This car was rebuilt and exhibited by Dan Garlits until 201 when in moved to the Wally Parks NHRA Museum. It has been a permanent resident at the World of Speed since 2014.

Flying mile = A vehicle gets a rolling start to get it as fast as possible before it enters the mile distance over which its speed is timed. Not sure how far of a head start the rules allow.
