Richard Petty switched to GM after eight years with Plymouth and that year will be remembered as one of Petty's finest. The year started with a win at the Daytona 500. This was the first NASCAR race to be televised start to finish. Petty went on to win the 1979 NASCAR championship by eleven points over Darrell Waltrip. Also in 1979, Dale Earnhardt was Rookie of the Year. This particular car was Richard Petty's short track car. He also raced the car to a 2nd place finish at Riverside. The car was powered by a 358 cubic inch Chevy motor capable of 650HP.
