In 1986, Terry Labonte signed a three year contract to race for Junior Johnson. In 1988, Labonte made 29 starts in this Monte Carlo. The car features a 358 cubic inch motor capable of 650HP which is hooked up to a 4-speed transmission. The car weights 3450 lbs.
On a side note, 1988 was the year that the Hoosier Tire Company challenged the dominance of Goodyear in NASCAR. A company with 18 employees took on a company with 350000 employees. Hoosier tires had a harder compound and grip tended to improve with wear. During the battle for supremacy, Goodyear and Hoosier continued to experiment with tire compounds. By the 600 at Charlotte, every team had switched to Hoosiers. Unfortunately that weekend, there were multiple tire failures which resulted in four drivers getting sent to the hospital - Buddy Baker, Rick Wilson, Harry Gant, Neil Bonnett. Most teams immediately switched back to Goodyear and the tire battle came to a quick end.
