Rookie sensation Colton Herta won pole position and led the field down the main straightaway followed closely by rookie Felix Rosenqvist and Josef Newgarden. Meanwhile, further back in the middle of the field, Graham Rahal triggered a six car wreck in the chicane on the first lap of the race. We have no pictures of that incident. The wreck included Zack Veach, Grahal Rahal, Takuma Sato, James Hincliffe, and Coner Daly.
After the mess was cleaned up, Alexander Rossi crashed into Jack Harvey in that same chicane. After that mess was cleaned up, the spectators gave a sarcastic cheer as everyone cleared the chicane without incident. Colton Herta held the lead until he wore out his tires and was overtaken by Scott Dixon. Soon afterwards, Dixon suffered battery problems and went down three laps in the pits as the crew resolved the battery issue. Australia's Will Power (who is from the same hometown as my grandfather - Toowoomba QLD) assumed the lead and went on to win the race in convincing fashion. Felix Rosenquist finished 2nd and Alexander Rossi finished 3rd.
