On the first lap of the race, pole position winner Will Power lead the field down the main straightaway. The cars at the front of the field made it through the chicane without issue. Problems began mid pack as several drivers bumped their cars into each other and some drivers were forced off track into the run-off area. Meanwhile, in the exit to that chicane, Zach Veach and Ed Jones bumped into each other setting off a massive six car accident on the first lap of the race. As you can see, it does get dry here in Portland during the summertime. Spectators covered in sun screen were now covered in dust. After a massive dust cloud cleared, the cars of James Hinchcliffe, Graham Rahal, Ed Jones, Marco Andretti sat is a heap at the end of the chicane. In the middle of the pile of cars was Scott Dixon. The upside-down car of Andretti flipped right over the top of Dixon without contact.
On the restart, Will Power lead the race until he was over taken by Ryan Hunter-Reay. Takuma Sato used fuel mileage strategy to win the race. Finish in 2nd place was Ryan Hunter-Reay while 3rd place went to Sebastian Bourdais. Scott Dixon was able to recover from the first lap wreck to finish in 5th place. Dixon went on to win the IndyCar Championship at the following race at Sonoma.
