The Indy Light Series was established in 1986. In 2010, the series became the third and final step of the ‘Road to Indy”. The Indy Light champion earns a $1M scholarship which is used towards racing in the IndyCar Series in the following season. That prize guarantees three attempts at IndyCar races including the Indianapolis 500. Since its inception, 140 Indy Light drivers have gone on to race in the IndyCar Series. In the 2019 Indianapolis 500, 23 of the 33 drivers in the starting field had experience racing in Indy Lights. Former Indy Light drivers include Scott Dixon, James Hinchcliffe, Tony Kanaan, Josef Newgarden, Patricio O'Ward, Colton Herta, Kyle Kaiser, Ed Jones, Spencer Pigot, Gabby Chaves, Jack Harvey, Matheus Leist, Felix Rosenqvist, and Zach Veach.
The chassis are built by Dallara and the cars are powered by 2.0L, 4-cylinder, turbocharged motors built by AER (Advanced Engine Research) which are hooked up to 6-speed paddle-shift transmissions. The motors produce 450HP with an additional 50HP available for ‘push-to-pass’.
